Phil Paxton
Treasurer
Member Club: Calgary Yacht Club
Phil Paxton is the Treasurer for the ASA and his role includes financial governance, fiscal prudence, government reporting, member information, and board accountability. Phil’s passion resides mainly in youth development, racing and coaching, and sailing for life. Phil’s goals as an ASA Board Member include ensuring the ASA Board is approachable to discuss ideas to make sailing in Alberta a pastime that all ages can embrace. The intent of ASA is to be in a supportive role for all ASA members. That support can be in the form of coaching, education, race management, facilitation, athlete development and/or safety.
Paula Patterson
Youth Director
Member Club: Glenmore Sailing Club
Paula’s daughter started sailing 8 years ago, then Paula decided to try it as well, taking her introduction to keelboats at Glenmore Sailing School. When she sails, Paula crews on a San Juan 21.
As Youth Director Paula is the main contact for clubs to email with questions about the youth. She is the liaison between the clubs, board, and coaches. Paula would love for clubs to email her with their ideas, comments, wishes and concerns. If she can’t help, she will pass the email to someone that can.
John Cormack
Equipment Director
Member Club: Newell Sailing Club
John Cormack is in charge of maintenance of ASA equipment, special projects such as the Moss trailer, and setting up equipment storage on the ASA truck. John started sailing in 1982, in the beginning crewing for several friends that had sail boats. John’s first regattas were crewing with a friend on a Narca. Sailing became a passion, so he bought his first boat, a Hobie 14, then graduated to a Hobie 17. John’s youngest son also enjoyed sailing and so he started hauling children and their boats to events across North America. At these events, John started helping wherever he could on shore or race committee and also became the “man with the trailer with tools”. When John’s son went to University, John switched to hauling boats for the more mature crowd. They have attended events in California, Florida and Mexico.
John has been the head of the race committee for the Prairie Wind Regatta for a number of years and enjoys hosting sailors at his home club. John believes that sailing is great sport. It has allowed his family many opportunities to learn, meet new friends, and travel to a number of locations.

He recently discovered sailing upon moving to Chestermere, when he joined the Calgary Yacht Club with his family.
